The Walking Billboard
Human attention, public visibility and wearable brand strategy.
Level 1 follows a design into manufacturing. Level 2 explores what happens when that garment enters the world: how it is noticed, how the wearer handles the response and how a brand gives that attention a useful destination.
Developed from Chuck and Vilma Coleman’s years of field experience, The Walking Billboard draws on their 2016–2025 case-study account and the continuing Subject Zero inquiry. Selected footage, firsthand accounts and practical exercises connect wearable design with real presentation decisions.
Learn from Subject Zero
Vilma Biliene Coleman, Subject Zero and co-investigator, is the central case study. Her experience opens a discussion about the difference between admiring a striking garment, choosing to wear it and sustaining a public presentation. Learners examine visibility, personal boundaries, audience reactions and the division of work between a wearer and a spokesperson.
The Level 2 curriculum
- 1. The Walking Billboard story. Examine the original portrait leggings and the development of a wearable communication approach.
- 2. Design in motion. Explore human movement, artwork placement, folds, seams and photographic imagery on a moving person.
- 3. Human attention and gaze. Discuss relevant research alongside KOS field observations, distinguishing observation from explanation.
- 4. Visibility, adoption and resistance. Examine why interest in a design may not lead to wearing it, and prepare for hesitation and social judgment.
- 5. Pushback and boundaries. Practice handling skeptical questions, refusals, photography requests and requests for unpaid work.
- 6. Trade-show presentation. Plan your introduction, team roles, scanning invitation and follow-up. Use selected KOS event accounts as discussion cases.
- 7. QR campaign engagement. Give attention a useful next step through a clear scanning invitation, relevant destination and follow-up plan. Detailed product records, privacy and passport readiness continue in Level 3.
- 8. Demonstration and evaluation. Present a campaign and distinguish scans, conversations, qualified inquiries and orders.
Your Level 2 outcome
A wearable campaign with a defined audience, garment presentation plan, wearer and spokesperson roles, working digital destination, product-information record and results sheet. Demonstrations may be completed in a supervised classroom setting; public wearing is optional.
Field experience and research
KOS’s proposed Biological Motion Tolerance concept is discussed as a question for further investigation, not a clinical diagnosis or validated psychological test. The course distinguishes documented observations, participant accounts, proposed explanations and established research. Students are assessed on their campaign decisions and evidence, not on reproducing Vilma’s personal response to attention.
Continue to Level 3: Connected Garments. Build the product-information record, responsible measurement system and maintenance plan behind the campaign. Explore QR Strategy & Digital Product Passport Readiness.
Partner-led teaching
The planned institutional program licenses KOS materials and prepares an instructor to lead the classes. Instructor assessment includes a practice lesson, accurate explanation of the evidence and respectful facilitation of audience-response exercises. Chuck and Vilma provide scheduled guest appearances.
